Lightengale® has two components: fiber optic cables designed to attach to the infusion tubes, and a small illuminator that can magnetically click onto any Lightengale fiber cable. When the Lightengale cables are attached to the tubes in an infusion set up, the nurse can quickly identify a specific tube by snapping the light to whichever IVT they wish to trace. As soon as the illuminator detects that it is attached to a cable, it will light up the IVT. Instead of requiring a chunk of stressful time to tediously trace each IVT through the tangles, in mere seconds Lightengale provides a clear visual cue lighting the way.
Standard IV tubing requires nurses to perform tedious and time consuming hand traces of lines when critical interactions with medication are required. This tracing protocol is prone to error, with severe consequences for patient safety. In environments such as ICUs, with potentially dozens of lines, there is increased risk. Lightengale® simplifies the process with a clear visual cue in seconds.
Yes. No modifications or changes to the pumps are necessary.
No, the illuminator can only be used with Lightengale® IV tubing. You will need to buy Lightengale IV tubing with attached fiber optic cables.
The illuminator has a three-month battery life. The batteries are standard, off-the-shelf 3V CR2 lithium batteries.
Instruction in the use of the illuminator and the ability to use light to trace the IVT will be provided. Instruction manuals will provide details of battery replacement as required.
Yes. Training materials were developed with nurse training professionals and are available upon FDA approval.
Lightengale® has been submitted for FDA approval and is under review.
When attached to a Lightengale® fiber cable, the Lightengale illuminator sends an LED light down the cable. The cable itself is specially designed to glow along its length. This makes the entire IVT visibly glow from the pump to the patient. The Lightengale illuminator only works when attached to a Lightengale fiber cable.
Inside the handheld device is an LED that illuminates when the handheld is connected to a Lightengale® fiber cable.
Lightengale® has been awarded numerous grants for testing and development, including Phase 1 STTR grants from both the NIH and the NSF to study Lightengale in pediatric and infectious isolation patients, respectively. Emory University's Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing is a research partner for Lightengale for both trials, and they will publish the results when complete.
Lightengale® is not currently available in the US until the FDA reviews and provides authorization. If you would like updates on availability or status, please fill out our contact form and we will be in touch.
We are seeking CE certification for the device concurrently with seeking FDA approval. Initial international markets will be in Europe.
